A good wear layer for engineered hardwood flooring is 3mm or above. If the wear layer is not handscraped, then the top layer can be sanded and finished 2-3 times over the life of the floor.
If it has a flat top it can be refinished and re-stained multiple times over the life of the floor. Typically up to 8-10 times if it is a 3/4″ thick floor. Solid wood is not recommended in areas with climates that vary into extreme humidity or extremely low and dry temperatures.
Oak is a classic species of hardwood flooring because it has a decent (approx 1290) janka rating, it’s a predominant species of tree especially in North America so can be more affordable, and has a variation of features from rings, knots and veins for character, and it is porous enough to absorb stain and so can be offered in a wide range of colors.
